Mangaluru: Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil hoisted the Indian tricolour flag at Nehru Maidan on August 15, marking the 73rd Independence Day celebration.
The protocol required the district in-charge minister to do the same, however, with the newly formed BS Yediyurappa government not having expanded the cabinet yet, the DC did the needful.
Various teams from Karnataka Reserve police, civil police, home guards, Traffic police, NCC, Scouts, Guides and police band demonstrated a colourful march-past.
Addressing the gathering, the DC said that the contributions of the freedom fighters cannot be measured. “Mahatma Gandhi and many others sacrificed their lives for us. Gandhiji’s words are the source of inspiration for all of us,” he said adding that the country will always remain indebted to the soldiers who brave sun and rain and fight for the nation.
The DC made a special mention of the NDRF personnel, who have helped the people in the flood-hit regions of the district in the rescue operations.
MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, former minister U T Khader, MLC Ivan D’Souza, MLA Vedavyas Kamath, Police Commissioner Dr Harsha, SP Laxmi Prasad DCP Law & Order Arunangshu Giri, IPS, DCP Crime & Traffic Lakshmi Ganesh K, KSPS and others were also present.
