Mangaluru: The union government has given its in-principal approval for the upgradation of the four-laned national highway between B C Road and Surathkal. According to MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, the 37-km long stretch along with additional infrastructure work will come under the Sagarmala programme.

The project is said to cost around Rs 500 Crore and will include the construction of parallel flyovers, additional underpasses, widening of the highway at certain points, reconstruction of bridges and strengthening of the highway and service roads.

Speaking to reporters at the inauguration of the underbridge on the Mangaluru-Bengaluru National Highway at Padil here on November 15, he said that the major work proposed was to upgrade the stretch from Baikampady to Lohitnagar from a tar road to a 11-mtr wide concrete road. He also said that the remaining 30-km stretch was to be further strengthened with tar and that the heavy traffic on the mentioned stretch, was being taken into consideration in the planning of the work.

In Surathkal, Kottara Chowki and B C Road, where only one-way flyovers are present, he said that parallel flyovers would be constructed in addition to vehicular underpasses proposed to be constructed at Honnakatte and Panambur. Demands from motorists to ease the traffic congestion, have motivated them to propose a grade separator at the Karnataka Polytechnic Junction and an overpass at the Nanthoor Junction.

Widening and strengthening of existing service roads, laying of new service roads at certain points between Kottara Chowki and Surathkal and the renovation of minor bridges at Brahmarakoothly and Arkula, are some of the other works that have been proposed.

Kateel said that the bridges across the Phalguni (Gurupur) River at Kulur and the overbridge at Baikampady would be reconstructed and added that the NHAI had already chosen a contractor for the operation and the maintenance of the 37-km stretch of highway.
