Mangaluru: A mentally unsound man, who had been missing from his home for the past three years, was rescued and reunited with his family thanks to the founder of the Maimuna Foundation Rehabilitation Centre, Mulki, Mohammed Asif.

Speaking to the media on Friday, Asif said, “Mahesh Patel, a mentally unsound man from Rajasthan, had vanished from his home three to four years ago. We heard that he got a job at the railway department in Rajasthan, but never joined duty. He instead went to his brother’s place in Mumbai and from there, he travelled to Mangaluru.”

According to Asif, Patel was in Mangaluru for three years and was causing a nuisance in the streets of Alake and Car Street. He would pelt stones and abuse people. Fortunately, no one was injured.

“We came to know about the Patel on August 28 this year. Along with my volunteers, I meet him in Car Street and from there, took him to the Maimuna Foundation Rehabilitation centre in Mulki. We gave him a bath, hair cut, shave, clothes and took him to the Yenepoya Hospital in Deralkatte for treatment. He remained there till today and he is looking great and healthy,” Asif added.

“While at the hospital, Patel regained his senses and was able to tell us about his family members in Rajasthan. He also gave us a phone number and we were able to call his father, who was in tears, but happy that his son is alive and well. Patel also spoke to his family members and told them that he was safe and healthy in Mangaluru under the care of the Maimuna Foundation,” he said.

A relative of Patel’s, Jithendra Patel and two others -Mularam Patel and Pancharama Patel, from Rajasthan who operate textile and utensils business in Mangaluru – were happy to see him as a changed man.

Till his father is able to reach Mangaluru, Patel and his documents have been handed over Jithendra Patel in the presence of the Bunder Police Station Inspector Govind Raju. Patel will reunite with his dad later and return to Rajasthan.

Addressing the media, Police Inspector Govind Raju said, “We had been receiving complaints about Mahesh Patel for many years. Whenever we tried to get him, he would run away or become restless, making it hard to control him. Our aim was to move him to an orphanage or ashram, so when we contacted Mohammed Asif, he was ready to do the needful. Mahesh was taken to the Maimuna Foundation on August 28 and I am happy to see him a changed man today.”

He then lauded Asif and his team for giving Mahesh a new life.
