Mangaluru: The Dakshina Kannada Mahila Congress on May 26, staged a protest against the Narendra-Modi led union government over the unprecedented hike in prices of petrol and diesel in the country.

Addressing the gathering, the Dakshina Kannada Mahila Congress President Shalet Pinto said, “The poor and middle class in the country are suffering due to instant hike in fuel prices by the Narendra Modi-led BJP government at the Centre. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had made several promises to the people prior to the elections but has failed to fulfill any of them.”

“The performance of the BJP government in four years is a zero. PM Modi had promised to bring back black money from abroad and credit Rs 15 Lakh into every citizen’s bank account. He has failed to fulfill his promise”, Shalet said.

Even though the prime minister calls for saving girls through Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao Andolan, his party’s MLAs are involved in sexual assault on women, she alleged adding that the BJP government in the Centre has failed to develop the country.

MLA U T Khader who joined the protests, also alleged that the union government had not taken any initiative for uplifting the youth and farmers, or for providing good education. “If more employment opportunities are not created for the youth and issues plaguing the farmers are not solved, soon it will lead to catastrophic problems in the future”, he said.

He also alleged the Prime Minister Narendra Modi had not taken any concrete measures against the ceasefire violations on Indo-Pak border despite his promises to take strong action against Pakistan. “Our soldiers are being killed but the prime minister has no time to visit the families of slain soldiers”, Khader claimed.

Khader compared the LPG prices during the UPA and BJP rule. He said, “The cost of LPG was very less during the UPA rule in the Centre but after the BJP came to power the cost of LPG has increased drastically. The skyrocketing prices are burdening the common man.”

Dakshina Kannada Congress Committee President Harish Kumar, corporator Sabitha Misquith among others participated in the protest.
