Mangaluru: Mahesh High School organised a seminar on the ill-effects of tobacco and smoking at Kottara Chowki, Mangaluru. The seminar was held in an effort to create awareness among the students, as well as the general public, about the adverse effects of consuming tobacco products.

A J Institute physicians Dr Pooja Shetty and Dr Shresta Shetty were the guests of honour. Mahesh High School head Deepali Shenoy presided over the programme.

Addressing the students, Dr Pooja highlighted the disastrous effects of nicotine found in most tobacco products. “Tobacco products are often sold in attractive covers in order to catch the eye of youngsters. Consuming such products leads to kidney, lung, throat, mouth and tooth diseases. About 4,000 chemicals are released by a single cigarette. Some of them can cause cancer. Passive smokers are also at great risk and that is why smoking in public places is banned in India,” she said.

“Chewing tobacco and spitting it out can also spoil the health of others around you. Selling tobacco products to youngsters below 18 years of age is banned in our country. Awareness can be created within our society by displaying signboards near schools and putting up street plays,” she added.

Later, Dr Shresta spoke to students on the different ways to maintain personal hygiene.

Earlier, Hussaif Mohammed introduced the guests while Ayan welcomed the gathering.

Krishak delivered the vote of thanks and Prathik N P compered the programme.
