Mangaluru: Konkani playwright and theatre activist Benedict Miranda, breathed his last on Monday, August 24.
His body was kept for public viewing at the Jeppu Cemetery Chapel from 3 pm onwards followed by a funeral mass at 4 pm. He was buried at the Jeppu cemetery.
Fondly known as Benna Ruzai, Miranda was born on March 21, 1946. He was a renowned playwright, dramatist and journalist.
During his career that spanned five decades, he had acted in numerous Konkani popular plays.
As a playwright, Miranda wrote and staged many plays with social and religious themes. He has five social plays, eight religious plays, eight comedy short plays and six poems to his credit.
He was also sub-editor of Mai-Gavn (Konkani monthly) for two years, as well as the editor of Ruzaichin Laran, the Rosario parish’s bulletin, for three years.
Miranda also served as the vice president of Konkani Natak Sabha for six years. He was also the first president of the ‘Kala Sampath’.
Miranda has received several honours from the ‘KON CAB’, Bengaluru, ‘Konkani Kutam’, Bahrain, ‘Kannik’, Konkani fortnightly, Konkani Writers’ Forum – Karnataka ®; ‘Karnataka Konkani Academy’, Karavalli Konkans, and Konkani Natak Sabha Mangaluru.
He also conducted many musical nites and Konkani plays under the banner of his own association, Bennar.
