Mangaluru: State Urban Development Minister U T Khader’s latest instructions to the Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board (KUWS&DB) has renewed the hopes of setting up a desalination plant in the city.

The project would be taken up only if it’s found feasible, said Khader. He also said that the board would look into matters such as the feasibility of supplying water industries as well as drinking water supply to the city at economical rates.

Reportedly, the board has been asked to prepare a feasibility report after consulting major industries including MCF, MRPL and MSEZ about their water requirements for the whole year. The industries also have been asked to submit their water requirements to the board.

The terms of reference for the report also include the study of the viability of the Public-Private Partnership for setting up 50 MLD capacity desalination plant in the city. Other than this, the report will also recommend quantum of funds, land requirement and its availability, maintenance, water production and market cost of water.

The idea for setting up a desalination plant was first mooted following the severe water shortage during the 2016 summers in the city. The civic bodies had shut down the industries to conserve drinking water for a longer period. A B Ibrahim, the then deputy commissioner had decided to form a Special-Purpose Vehicle to consider the proposal for setting up a desalination plant.
