Mangaluru: Former Mangaluru South MLA J R Lobo, on Thursday, questioned why the Karnataka Cabinet withdrew 62 criminal cases against BJP leaders including Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, Law Minister Madhuswamy, Tourism Minister C T Ravi, MP Prathap Simha, Agriculture Minister B C Patil, MP Sumalatha Ambareesh, and others.

“On behalf of the Congress party, I urge that the High Court and the Supreme Court intervene in the matter of the withdrawal of the 62 criminal cases against BJP leaders,” he said during a press conference here.

Speaking further, the former MLA said, “Based on the recommendation of a sub-committee headed by Karnataka Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai, it was decided to withdraw the cases against the BJP leaders. Law Minister Madhuswamy reasoned that the cases were withdrawn for public interest and to reduce the burden on the court. He also said that if Pratap Simha or Renukacharya fight for a public cause, cases against them will be withdrawn.”

Adding that the reasoning is “ridiculous and makes no sense”, the Congress leader said that this shows how the BJP government has “one law for the people’s representatives and another law for the common man”.

“We demand that the withdrawn cases be persued according to legal procedures and that the High Court and Supreme Court stay the withdrawal of the 62 cases. We urge the High Court and Supreme court to also conduct a thorough enquiry in this regard. The government should be protecting the people, but the BJP government is protecting their own leaders by withdrawing criminal cases against them,”he said.

It can be recalled that on September 3, the Karnataka government had announced that they will be withdrawing 62 criminal cases against its MPs and MLAs.

Minister J C Madhuswamy and Tourism Minister C T Ravi were facing charges of rioting, unlawful assembly and wrongful restraint. Minister Anand Singh, who left the Congress party to join the BJP, was booked in 2017 for attacking a Hospete Taluk office. He was charged with criminal intimidation, assaulting a public servant, and damaging public property. Mysuru MP Pratap Simha was booked for trying to run over a policeman. The other leaders whose cases are being dropped include Mandya MP Sumalatha Ambareesh, MLA Hallapa Achar, and MLA and the CM’s political secretary MP Renukacharya.
