Mangaluru: Close on the heels of increasing number of COVID-19 cases in Karnataka, Indian Railway Board has instructed both Konkan and Southern railway to set up isolation wards for the treatment of COVID-19 patients. If everything goes as per the plan 20 coaches will be converted into isolation wards within a week in Mangaluru.

As railway chief medical officer instructed the railways to set up isolation wards for treating COVID-19 patients, work is on now to convert empty and sleeper coaches into isolation ward. By removing the seats of railway coaches, works on setting up of toilet and bathroom is under progress.

Railway PRO Gopinath told newskarnataka.com that work for making railway isolation coaches has kick started in Mangaluru.

“Two coaches have been converted into isolation wards and 20 more coaches will be converted within a week” he added.

Sources from Konkan railway informed that it has received instruction from railway board to set up isolation wards and training is being given to paramedical and other medical staff to handle the patients of COVID-19.

Even in the past, mobile hospital service was extended by the railways.

Named ‘Lifeline EXpress’ the idea behind this train, which was India’s first railway mobile clinic was to extend medical facilities to farflung places.

Flagged off in Delhi, it has reached Uttara Kannada district in 2017 after extending medical service at various places across the country.
