Mangaluru: Indira Canteens will be opened across Dakshina Kannada district by next January, said Minister for Food and Civil Supplies U T Khader on October 16.

Addressing the media persons here, Khader said Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had ordered to launch Indira Canteens in every district and taluks across the state. Mangaluru City Corporation will get five canteens along with one each in Bantwal, Puttur, Sullia and Belthangady taluks.

In these canteens, food will be available at cheaper rates. In places with a population of 45,000 to 1 lakh, food will be provided for around 500 people and in places with below 25,000 population, food will be prepared for around 300 people, he added.

Khader further added that the local representatives would finalise the areas and there would be a common building design for all the canteens.

The ambitious project of Indira Canteens was launched on August 16 by Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi. In the initial phase of the launch, 101 canteens will serve vegetarian breakfast at Rs 5 per plate and lunch and dinner at Rs 10 each in 101 civic wards.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had provided Rs 100 Crore in the state budget for this fiscal (2017-18) to run the canteens in all the 198 civic wards on the lines of the popular Amma Unavagam in the neighbouring Tamil Nadu, started by late J. Jayalalithaa, the former chief minister of that state.
