Sullia: Floods have wrecked havoc sparing none. While human beings and livestock have been left in lurch, the buildings and bridges too have not been able to withstand the nature’s fury.

Amid this, the “Bridge Man of India” Padmashree awardee Girish Bharadwaj known for his innovative and eco-friendly hanging bridges has expressed his pain over the destruction of several hanging bridges created by him in the current Karnataka floods.

“I’ve received information that around eight to 10 hanging bridges, including Mugeradka hanging bridge located near Uppinanagadi have been damaged. Even the ones built at Belagavi and other parts of the state have been damaged. I’m deeply hurt to even know that the pieces put together by me are lost. My heart goes out to all the people who have lost their lives in floods and those displaced by the natural calamity, ” he said.

Speaking about the life span of a hanging bridge, Girish said, “Usually the hanging bridges are built comparatively higher than the normal bridges, so that the gushing river water, even during flood-like situation doesn’t harm it. The hanging bridges are built keeping in mind next 50 years of water flow pattern in rivers. Where the rivers flow at its maximum, in such places, these bridges are constructed 10 feet above the flow. But this time around the floods have completely crossed our calculations and imagination.”

Expressing his distress, he said, “The hanging bridges which have to be the connecting lines to the outer world for the people living in the villages, are now completely devastated due to massive floods.”
