Mangaluru: Lokayukta Justice P Vishwanath Shetty has instructed the Mangaluru Tahsildar to identify a suitable land to construct a full-fledged beggars’ rehabilitation centre in city.
Shetty visited the rehabilitation cetnre at Pacchanady on Saturday, July 20 and inspected the centre and communicated with the inmates. As the existing centre has been accommodating over 150 destitute, there is no space for more number of people. Hence, Shetty opined that around 10 to 15 acres of land is needed to construct a full-fledged rehabilitation centre. Along with accommodation, proper land is required for inmates to engage themselves in agricultural and horticulture activities, handicrafts among others, he said.
He also said that providing proper accommodation to the destitute is the duty of the government and society should allow them to lead a dignified life. “ If prisoners work for a day, they would get Rs 175 from the government. I will write a letter to the government to start similar facility for the inmates of beggars’ rehabilitation centre also”, he added.
Mangaluru Tahsildar Guruprasad, Lokayukta Inspector Bharathi, Revenue Inspector Asif among others were present.
