Mangaluru: “There is no such thing as a free lunch”- words to live by. Unfortunately, for a 20-year-old student, the chance of winning a BMW car worth Rs 4 Crore, proved to be too tempting to pass up, and ended up shelling out Rs 1.43 Lakh for a car that never came.

According to sources, the victim had mortgaged jewellery in order to pay to clear the formalities in anticipation of receiving the car. The complaint filed by the victim with the cyber crime police states that a call was received by him on October 31 from someone who identified himself as Frank Douglas. The caller told the student that he had won the vehicle and all he had to do was pay Rs 24,500. The student was asked to deposit the money into the account of one, Lalremruot, into which he obligingly deposited a sum of Rs 15,000 on November 1.

Convinced that they had their prey hooked, they continued to squeeze out payments under the pretext of various expenses like customs fees, cost of transfer and other related expenses.

After making a deposit on November 1, he was asked to transfer Rs 24,000 into the account of Sandeep Kumar on November 3, on November 4 he had to deposit Rs 30,000 into another account, on November 6 he had to deposit a sum of Rs 20,000 into the account of Neha Kumari, and finally on November 7, he deposited Rs 10,000 into the account of Surender Singh.

The student ended up paying a total of Rs 1,43,500 to the con artistes, who stopped calling him, after which he realised that he had been had.

The police have admitted that their repeated issuing of warnings about spam calls, has had no effect as people continue to get duped.
