Puttur: Commotion broke out in a small village in Puttur when few individuals from one community were heading to their friend’s home to be a part of Bakrid celebration on Wednesday.

Abdul Shamir from Nidpally Keremaru had invited his colleagues for lunch on account of Bakrid to his home. The group of guests, comprising of a few girls who had come from Mangaluru were questioned by an autorickshaw driver identified as Rukma, who scolded the Muslims for inviting Hindu girls to their homes.

Within no time, a crowd gathered and started abusing the girls specifically who were invited by Shamir.
However, timely intervention by the police prevented the issue from snowballing into a crisis.

When the policemen arrived, nearly ten people had surrounded five boys and five girls and one of the youth was assaulted by the mob. He was rushed to the hospital by the police.

The police took into custody Rukma, Satish Karnappady, Sheshappa Fitter, Ganesh, Kunhi, Duggappa, and Purushotham and registered Suo moto case under section 149 of Indian Penal Code for disturbing peace in the society and disrupting harmony among different communities.

Hindu leaders from the village condemned the attitude of the perpetrators and supported the police.
