Hearing commences in Manipal gang rape case

Udupi : The hopes for justice to the victim of the  Manipal gang rape case  are kindled with the District and Sessions Court beginning the hearing into the case on September 21, Saturday,  almost three months after the fateful incident on the night of June 20.

The three prime accused namely Anand, Yogish and Hariprasad and also the two other accused namely Harindra and Balachandra who are arrested on charges of destroying evidences, were produced before the court.

Judge BM Angadi  fixed the next day of hearing to October 28, 2013 and asked the prosecution to prove the charges mentioned in the chargesheet by then. Mangalore’s senior advocate Purushottam Poojari is the defense lawyer for the accused in this case that hit headlines across the nation.

The bail petition of  Balachandra and Harindra are presently  before the high court and their advocate is confident that they will get a bail.

The three main accused were arrested a week after the fateful incident. The arrests were preceded by dramatic developments wherein two of the accused attempted suicide.

The three main accused are lodged in Shimoga prison for security reasons while the other two are placed in Hiriadka jail.
