Mangaluru: In connection with the alleged misappropriation of funds in the Haleyangadi Gram Panchayat, the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat has decided to suspend it during the general meeting on Monday, September 16.
As some members were for and some against suspending the Gram Panchayath, the decision was put to a vote. While 21 members favoured for the suspension, 16 members opposed the decision. Finally, the Haleyangadi Gram Panchayat was suspended as a majority of the members were in favour of the decision.
Prior to the suspension, ZP member Vinod Kumar raised the issue of misappropriation of funds in the Haleyangadi Gram Panchayat and insisted that it be suspended. Members like Mamatha Gatti, M S Mohammed and others, however, opposed the demand claiming that it would send a bad message.
The BJP members, on the other hand, insisted that the Gram Panchayat in question be suspended and that a proper probe into the issue as well as the legality of the developmental activities be conducted.
It can be noted that the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Dakshina Kannada, booked two panchayat officials of the Haleyangadi Gram Panchayat for alleged misappropriation of funds amounting to more than Rs 1 crore in relation to street light work.
