Gymnast Dipa Karmakar in Mangaluru

Gymnast Dipa Karmakar in Mangaluru-1Mangaluru: Dipa Karmakar, India's first female gymnast at the Olympics and Padmashree Awardee, on December 16 opined that success comes with immense hard work.

She was addressing the gathering after inaugurating "AGON-2K17", annual sports day organised by the Natekal Kanachur Medical and Research Institution here on December 16.

"Success can be achieved with immense hard work. The students who have participated in the sports day today, are representatives of sports field in India", said Dipa Karmarkar.

U K Monu, Chairman of Kanachuru Institute of Medical Science and Research Centre said, "Dipa Karmakar is a role model for the women in the country. She is an inspiration for all who want to achieve in the fields of their choice."

Kanachur Institute of Medical Science and Research Centre President Abdul Rehaman, Administrator Dr. Rohan Monis, Senate Member Dr. U T Ifthikar Ali, Zohar Monu, Medical Superintendent Dr. Deviprasad Shetty were present on the occasion.

Kanachur Institute of Medical Science and Research Centre felicitated Dipa Karmarkar and her coach Biswas Nandi on the occasion.

Later speaking to media, Karmarkar said, "Since Gymnastic Federation of India is not functioning actively, the gymnasts are in trouble." Expressing displeasure over less importance given to gymnasts in India, Dipa said, "No Gymnastic competitions have been organised and there are no proper facilities. During the Olympics there were no proper equipment. Due to the hard work put in by the trainer, I could win the medal in Olympics."

She further said, "It was very hard to get a chance to participate in Olympics after 52 years. In Gymnastic category, no Indian girl had participated in Olympics. The girls who have participated so far had secured 64 or 66th rank. Competing in the Olympics was a challenge. Because of the efforts of the coach, Sports Authority of India and my family, I could bring laurels to my country."

"Though the Gymnastic Federation of India is not actively functioning, Sports Authority of India has been a constant support to us. It has also provided Gymnastic equipment worth Rs 78 Lakh to which we are grateful," she added.
