George Fernandes’ death is loss to whole country: Mangaluru Bishop

Mangaluru: “George Fernandes was a great leader and his loss is not limited to his birthplace Mangaluru only, but it is for the whole country”, said Most. Rev. Dr. Aloysius Paul D’Souza, Bishop Emeritus, Diocese of Mangaluru on Saturday, February 2.

He was addressing a gathering after paying tribute to the departed soul of George Fernandes during the public condolence meeting organised by the Mangaluru Chapter of Citizens Council, at T V Raman Pai Hall, Kodialbail. He said, “As George had experienced the problems of workers, he fought for their upliftment. He fought against injustice in the society. There is a need to follow his footsteps,” he said.

Michael Fernandes, Late George Fernandes’ brother clarified that the his family is not indulged in a fight for property, as claimed by the media. Media has wrongly reported about our family. But, in reality, anyone of us has not expected anything from anybody. Our intention is to help others and not to keep anything for us”, he said.

Nitte University Chancellor N Vinay Hegde, Chairman of Alva’s Education Trust Dr. M Mohan Alva, Mayor Bhaskar K, Mangaluru South MLA Vedavyas Kamath andf MP Nalin Kumar Kateel among others spoke on the occasion.

Prior to the programme, guests at the programme offered floral tributes to the portrait of George Fernandes.
