Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada district in-charge and Fisheries Minister Kota Srinivas Poojary informed that the state government has decided to build a floating jetty at a cost of Rs 6.5 crores at Hoige Bazar and Malpe, on Monday, January 20.

He was speaking after inaugurating the newly built passenger jetty at Sultan Battery and a ferry service “Kumaradhara” between Sultan Battery and Thota Bengre. Poojary said, “Prior to the construction of the jetty, it was instructed to build a floating jetty, so that there are no issues. Experts have been told to review the technical systems. The jetty will be completed once the technical approval is obtained.”

“The state government will take all possible measures to ensure the safety and security of the fishermen whose livelihood depends on the sea. A credit card scheme for fishing families has also been launched. We will extend this to all fishing families, “ he said.

Poojary also informed that the government has earmarked around Rs 29 crores for dredging between Alive Bagilu and Sultan Battery as it hampers fishing. “The tender process for dredging work is under progress and dredging work will be started soon,” he said.

Responding to the demand for the provision of RTC to those who are living in the Thota Bengre area, Poojary said that he would rectify the problem soon after communicating with the MLA, Deputy Commissioner and Thahasildar.

Mangaluru South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath said, the third phase of the jetty expansion work, which has stalled in the old harbour environment, will begin soon.  He also informed that as there is a demand to set up a police outpost in the Bengre area, the proposal has been sent to the Home Minister.
