Mangaluru: Police arrested five persons in connection with the illegal dumping of meat waste in the Vittal police station limits. Three out of the five belong to Kerala.

Based on a complaint filed by Panchayat Development Officer of Alike village Jinappa Gowda, the police have arrested Mohammed Rafique (30) resident of Volamogaru village in Puttur; Saufi (30), a resident of Malaparamba, Kerala; Ahmed Gajani (34), a resident of Kozhikode, Kerala; Masood (25), a resident of Kozhikode, Kerala, and Mohammed Jiyaullah Ansari (20) a resident of Bihar.

The police booked the arrested under various provisions of IPC relating to health and environment including Section 269 (negligent act likely to spread infectious disease dangerous to life), 270 (malignant act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life), 277(Fouling water of public spring or reservoir) and 278 (making atmosphere noxious to health).

The public in Vittal had caught the accused, while they tried to illegally dispose of meat waste collected from Kerala. Only after this incident the administration woke up from its slumber and registered a case about the illegal inter-state waste dumping.

Reports said that the accused would charge fees from slaughterhouses in Kerala to dispose of their waste. Sources said that some traders hire vehicles to dispose the meat waste at the Karnataka border as Kerala government strictly prohibits illegal waste dumping and levies fines on violators.
