Mangaluru: Keeping the approaching monsoon season and its accompanying dangers in mind, a notification has been issued under the Karnataka Marine Fishing (Regulation) Act 1986, banning fishing along the coast of Karnataka. The ban will be in effect from June 1 till July 31.
According to the order, mechanised or traditional fishing boats with in or outboard engines of more than 10 HP capacity, that use nets or other equipment for fishing, have been banned from entering the waters during the period specified. The only fishermen exempted from the ban are those who use traditional and country boats, provided they use engines with less than 10 HP capacity.
Violators of the orders will be eligible for the punishments and fines specified in the aforementioned act. They also won’t be able to avail benefits or subsidies for purchase of Diesel for a year.
All fishermen have been asked by the district administration to religiously adhere to the ban order.
However, even before the ban has come into effect, fishermen have started bringing their boats back to shore because of the uncertain climatic conditions of the past few days.
