Mangaluru: For the first time, the state government has imported sand from foreign soil to tackle the rising prices due to scarcity of sand. The first shipment of sand imported from Malaysia reached NMPT in Mangaluru on December 7.
According to MSIL sources, around 52,129 tonnes of sand, of the five lac tonnes of sand proposed to be imported from Malaysia reached NMPT and unloading works have begun to transport the same to other districts via trucks. The ship had left Malaysia on November 27.
As per a traditional calculation, 52,129 tons of sand translates to 2,482 truck loads of sand. An estimated three days time is required to complete the unloading works.
