nitk marathon 5Mangaluru: The fifth edition of the NITK Karavali Marathon, recently organised by the NITK Alumni Association, saw the participation of over 3,000 people from across the country, including the alumni of the country’s premier technical institution.

The marathon was flagged off by this year’s Karavali Marathon ambassador, international athlete Arjun Devaiah, and actress Krishnaa Bhat. The marathon commenced at sharp 5 am and ended at 9.15 am.

At the Prize Distribution Ceremony Arjun Devaiah, addressing the gathering, said that India has about 60 per cent youth, the highest in the world. “But the irony is that out of 60 per cent youths, almost 80 per cent suffer from hypokinetic diseases. Apart from this, 90 per cent of youngsters have aged 10-12 times their biological age, and some of them have even aged 20-25 times their actual age, which is a sign that one is getting into the grave soon. All these youths are the best brains of India, and they need to be physically fit,” he advised youngsters. He added that today, China is speaking only about a physical revolution, as it knows that India has more youngsters. “Swami Vivekananda has said that instead of reading holy scriptures, it is better to play football for 45 minutes, which gives one nerves of steel,” he said.

Krishnaa Bhat, congratulating the participants said, “Today all of us ran for a reason; to combat climate change. Even though we’re too late to begin, we are still doing it as a green initiative and making it a routine. Let’s turn the green initiative into a green practice. I hope that a healthy youth will be able to find solutions to all these problems and sports will contribute to the creation of a healthy youth community.”

Presiding over the function Prof K Umamaheswar Director NITK, said, “The country is belongs to you, and we need to take care of the climate which belong to us. Let’s put a full stop to the use of plastic in the campus. Under the ‘Fit India Movement Call’ we have to combat climate change. As long as the issue of global warming is not personally addressed, no one will be concerned. Climate change belongs to me individually as it is damaging to society and we belong to the society. Only when it hits me, individually, that is when I really wake up to know the importance of it.”

The 2020 edition of the Karavali Marathon was organised to create awareness on combating climate change and drive a call to action in the Karavali region. This marathon was a special edition as part of NITK’s Diamond Jubilee celebration.

The event was supported by the Rotaract Club and the NITK Students’ Council. It is perhaps the only full marathon (41.2 km) in India that is entirely conducted by students. Organisers said that as many 1,500 participants were registered from 13 countries including India in advance for the marathon, and many others joined the marathon on Sunday. The unique feature of the run was that a part of it was through the scenic NITK Surathkal Beach, along the beach side temple and lighthouse.

The events included a full marathon (42.2km), half marathon (21.1km), 10 km, 5 km races and a 3km fun run.

K Balaveera Reddy, chairperson of the board of governors of NITK, B K Krishnamurthy global president, NITKSAA, Niranjan Mahabalappa vice president NITK Alumni, and Karthik Pillai, race director, 2020 were present.
