Mangaluru: The Department of Urban Development has already completed the draft copy of Green Building policy, wherein adopting rainwater harvesting, solar energy system and planting saplings in the surroundings will be mandatory for all those who construct new buildings.

Minister for Urban Development and Housing U T Khader informed on Monday, June 24 that the policy would be implemented through the local bodies in the respective areas and stringent action would be taken against those who violate the guidelines. Importance will also be given to maintain cleanliness, segregation of waste, treatment of wastewater among others in the new green building policy, he said.

As per the draft copy of green building policy, those who apply for building license should show the blueprint of the building, wherein rainwater and solar energy system being installed in the same building should be shown. The building license will be given by the local administration only after ensuring that the owner of the building has adhered to the guidelines mentioned in the policy.

‘Amendment needed to 1964 Act’

While replying to a query on the formation of a separate team by the Muslim community in order to prevent illegal transportation of cattle, Khader said that it was a good move by the community. “None should support the illegal business by anyone and I welcome the decision of the Muslim community to form a separate team for preventing illegal transportation of cattle. However, the union government should bring an amendment to the Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Cattle Preservation Act 1964 and should prevent confusion over transportation of cattle. There should be uniformity in the Act throughout the country to ensure that no person indulges in the illegal act.
