Mangaluru: Dr. Anita Ravishankar, an Associate Professor of Sociology at Mangalore University, has been now sentenced to five years in prison after being caught by Lokayukta police while accepting a bribe.
As the allegations have been proved, she was arrested for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs. 5,000 from a research student on December 4, 2012 while assigning the research project to her student Prema.
Umesh G Shet, a Mangaluru Lokayukta inspector, and his team launched a raid and detained Dr. Anita Ravishankar as she was accepting a Rs. 5,000 as advance. Dr Anitha was said to have sought Rs 10,000 at first, then Rs 4,000 and Rs. 16,800 later.
Prema was asked to use the recorder through which the professor was caught after the girl contacted the Lokayukta. Anita was then taken to the sessions court for questioning.
Under Section 7 of the Anti-Corruption Act, the accused will serve two years in prison and pay a Rs. 15,000 fine, and under Section 13(1), she will serve three years in prison and pay a Rs. 15,000 fine (D). If she does not pay the fines, she will be sentenced to an additional month in prison. The accused must serve both sentences simultaneously, according to the court.
The operation included Dakshina Kannada Lokayukta SP Mohandas Pai, DYSP Vittaldas Pai, inspector and others.
