Mangaluru: In connection with the increasing number of dengue cases in Dakshina Kannada district, physician Dr. Srinivas Kakkillaya asked people not to expect the officials of either health department or Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) to take the precautionary measures to prevent dengue, but and take initiative to keeping their surroundings clean and give maximum priority to cleanliness.

Speaking to reporters here on Monday, July 22, Kakkillaya said, as the present weather condition is more conducive for mosquito breeding, people should not allow fresh water to stagnate at any place. It just 10 minutes in a day to dispose the waste materials in such a manner that freshwater accumulates and helps to breed mosquitos. If everybody gives maximum priority to cleanliness, there is no question of death from diseases like malaria, dengue among others”, he informed.

Kakkillaya informed that there is no specific treatment to dengue and it is not necessary to undergo NS1 test, if a person suffering from normal fever. “Sudden onset of high fever, appearance of red rashes on the body, body ache, immense discomfort during fever, headache, vomiting among others are the normal symptoms of dengue fever. If such symptoms are found in a person, he should meet the doctor and follow the directions of the doctor. However, people should not either neglect or panic when such symptoms appear. As there is no specific treatment for dengue fever, people should not compel the doctors to provide glucose or any other medication. There is no need of specific food system to increase the immunity level of a patient as everyone’s body has its own immunity levels”, he said.

District Health Officer M Ramakrishna Rao informed that three people had succumbed due to dengue fever so far in the district and the departments concerned have been taking all appropriate measures to tackle it. However, people should cooperate with the officials in connection with source detection as community participation plays an important role in preventing the disease.
