Mangaluru: “Tipu was a capable statesman whose intention was to chase away the British from our country. One should not oppose ‘Tipu Jayanti’ in order to gain political mileage, but should accept his patriotism and contribution to our country,” said MLC Ivan D’Souza on Saturday, November 10.

Presiding over the Tipu Jayanti programme organised by the district administration at the Nethravathi auditorium in the Zilla Panchayat office, Ivan said, “Though Tipu Sultan made some mistakes, one should consider the welfare programmes introduced during his reign. Tipu Sultan’s intention was to fight against the British and chase them away from our country and not to harm anybody.”

Pointing out the opposition made by some pro-Hindu outfits and the BJP against celebrating Tipu Jayanti in state, he said, “Those who oppose Tipu Jayanti don’t know the history of Tipu Sultan. They are don’t have the patience to understand his intention welfare programmes. Tipu lost his life on the battlefield and that is enough to prove that he fought for the independence of his people,” he said.

Shed light on Tipu’s welfare programmes

University College Principal Dr M A Uday Kumar, while delivering the keynote address, said, “Tipu had given more importance to irrigation, plantation crops, horticulture and initiated several developmental programmes. As he gave greater prominence to silk production in those days, farmers have benefited much and it gained importance at the international level also. Instead of shedding light on his mistakes, it is better to highlight his greater contribution.”

Tipu Jayanti should be celebrated in a public place

MLC and district Congress Committee president Harish Kumar, while delivering his inaugural address said, “Tipu Jayanti should be organised in a public place like the Town Hall so that all can attend the programme. We should not mind those who oppose the programme as they even question the necessity of celebrating Gandhi Jayanti and Nehru Jayanti.”

Prior to the programme, the guests offered a floral tribute to the portrait of Tipu Sultan. Dakshina Kannada district Deputy Commissioner S Sasikanth Senthil, Superintendent of Police Dr B R Ravikanthe Gowda, ZP CEO Dr Selvamani R, IGP (Western Range) Arun Chakravarthy, Commissioner of Police T R Suresh, Mangaluru Taluk Panchayat president Mohammed Monu, Mayor Bhaskar K, Kannada and Culture Department Assistant Director Rajesh G were among those present.
