Mangaluru: The Union Ministry of Finance should not take the decision of merging Vijaya Bank with other Banks and if the government goes ahead with its decision, a hunger strike will be observed in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office”, informed MLC Ivan D’Souza on September 19.

Addressing the reporters at his office in the MCC he said, Vijaya Bank started functioning in the year 1931 and it has enhanced the prestige of Dakshina Kannada district. The decision of merging Vijaya Bank into other banks is a conspiracy, intended to help the corporate sector. Vijaya Bank has 2129 branches in the whole country. It has 583 branches in Karnataka including 79 branches in Dakshina Kannada district and 63 branches in Udupi”, he said.

Though the government is citing the burden of Non-Performing Assets (NPA), why can’t it take action against Vijay Mallya and Neerav Modi who have cheated the banks to the tune of Rs 9300 Crore and Rs 13000 Crore respectively. Merging a bank with other banks will not be a solution to the NPA”, he said.

Ivan was keen to know whether the banks which are merged with State Bank of India are in profit now. “I will strongly oppose the move of merging Vijaya Bank with other Banks and I will take a delegation to the Prime Minister of India and Union Finance Minister to mount pressure on them not to go ahead with their move. Let the BJP MPs and ministers of the state approach PM and finance minister in this regard”, he said.

‘Kumaraswamy will complete his full term’

Responding to a query on the alleged effort of BJP to topple the coalition government, Ivan said,”Earlier, BJP had tried to purchase MLAs by accumulating a huge amount of Rs 500 Crore. However, their effort has failed. Now, BJP State President B S Yeddyurappa is struggling hard to topple the government again. However, Kumaraswamy will complete his full term of five years”, he said.

Deputy Mayor Mohammed K, Corporator Abdul Latheef, former corporators Nagendra Kumar and K Bhaskar Rao were present.
