Mangaluru: Condemning the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) arrest of senior Congress leader D K Shivakumar in New Delhi in connection with a money laundering case, the party’s Dakshina Kannada district unit staged a massive protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office on Wednesday, August 4.

The leaders at the protest meet claimed that the Union Government has been misusing the government departments in order to target Congress leaders. Addressing the protesters, former minister B Ramanath Rai alleged that when the BJP leaders, including Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, “purchased” MLAs in order to form the government illegally, the ED remained mum. “This is hate politics being used by the BJP leaders. As the Union Government has miserably failed in their administration, both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah are diverting the attention of the public by targeting Congress leaders,” he alleged.

Former MLA J R Lobo, who was also present for the protest, claimed that even though Shivakumar co-operated with the ED officials during their investigation, he was arrested for refusing to cooperate with the inquiry. “If the Union Government goes on arresting Congress leaders in false cases, the party will intensify its protest,” he warned.

Meanwhile, Congress leaders set fire to the effigies of Narendra Modi and Amit Shah and shouted slogans against the BJP-led Central Government.

Some of the Congress leaders were later detained by the police when they attempted to block the road.

MLCs Hareesh Kumar, Ivan D’Souza, former minister K Abhayachandra Jain, other leaders like Mamatha Gatti, Shalet Pinto, Sudheer T K and others were present.
