Mangaluru: The Dakshina Kannada District Covid-19 Helpline of the Congress party, also known as Arogya Hasta, handed over ten pushcarts to ten street vendors on Friday.

The pushcarts fitted with umbrellas were handed over by Panama Corp Ltd CEO and member of the Indian National Congress Vivekraj Poojary, former MLC and KPCC spokesperson Ivan D’souza, and DK District Congress president Harish Kumar, and others.

Mohammed Aman, Renuka of Panjimogaru, Varija K, Kirana of Valencia, Yakub Adyar of Adyar, Bhavanishankar of Yeyyadi, K Chandrika of Kodikal, Padmavathi Kamathara, Mohammed Farooq of Kudroli, and Geetha Goudar were the beneficiaries.

Speaking on the occasion at the district Congress office in Mallikatta, former MLC and KPCC spokesperson Ivan D’Souza slammed the state BJP government for failing to prepare for the second wave of Covid-19 pandemic.

“Not just the elected BJP state officials, but even the district administrations of the undivided districts have failed to prepare for the next wave of Covid-19. I want to ask those concerned how they are preparing to contain the spread of Covid-19 in the state?” he asked.

He then urged the government to release compensation of Rs 5 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund to the BPL families, whose kin have perished due to the pandemic. “The government, unfortunately, has made no preparations yet, and moreover, it has withdrawn the order to provide 50 per cent of beds in private hospitals to Covid-19 patients,” he said.

He also alleged that their sources reveal to them that the district administrations’ Covid-19 tests numbers are also bogus. “I suggest that the district administration increase the number of tests,” he said.

Speaking further, Ivan accused the government and district administration of not taking strict action against those flouting the guidelines issued to curb the spread of Covid-19.

He also urged the government to take drastic measures to upgrade the PHC infrastructure and set up rehabilitation centres to monitor the people’s health.

Additionally, he demanded that the state government provide Covid-19 tests/treatment for free.
