Mangaluru: Condemning the gang rape on a college girl in Puttur, the members of Dakshina Kannada District Congress Committee staged a massive protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office on Monday, July 8.
Demanding stringent action against the culprits involved in the rape case and other heinous crimes, former MLA Shakuthala Shetty said, “As the punishment for culprits is simple in our country, people don’t have any fear while committing crimes. If our country introduces stringent punishments like hanging the culprits, none would dare to commit any crime.”
“To prevent atrocity against women, there should be stringent laws like in Saudi Arabia where rapists are hanged publicly. As BJP is in power in the centre, it should introduce such a law in our country also”, she urged.
Pointing at the recent stabbing of a college girl in Deralakatte by a youth, Shetty said, “Udupi MP Shobha Karandlaje had blamed District In-charge Minister U T Khader for the stabbing incident. However, though a college girl was gang-raped in Puttur, she preferred to keep mum about the incident. Why this double standards by the BJP leaders?” she questioned.
MLC and District BJP President Hareesh Kumar, former minister B Ramanath Rai, district Youth Congress President Mithun Rai among others were present.
