Mangaluru: The data available in District Vector Borne Disease Control office points that Dakshina Kannada district has seen a 26 percent surge in dengue cases in the last four years.
It can be noted that the outbreak of dengue in Dakshina Kannada district is suspected to have so far claimed six lives. According to the statistics, 656 cases have been reported till August, 2019, which is the highest in four years. The six lives lost are being treated as suspected deaths and confirmation is yet to arrive.
A total of 415 cases have been recorded in July month alone and the numbers have forced the administration to swing into action. While the officials of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), District Health Department were acting slow, Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil ensured that preventive measures were carried out on a war footing basis to destroy larvae in affected areas. The district is witnessing heavy rain sometime and no rain in otherwise. This helps mosquitoes to breed in stagnant water.
The data shows that the number of dengue cases has suddenly escalated in June and continued to increase in July. The MCC, student volunteer organisations and NGOs are working day and night to bring the outbreak under control.
