Mangaluru: The wholesale dealers and retailers of fruits and vegetables in the city attempted to start their business activities at Central Market in Hampankatta on Tuesday, June 9. However, MCC stopped their attempt using the police force.
Despite, Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has cautioned of taking legal action against both wholesale dealers and retailers if they attempt to start their vending activities inside Central Market, they ignored the directions. Meanwhile, there were heated arguments between the officials and vendors when they tried to start their activities.
It can be noted that MCC had decided to shift Central Market in Hampankatta to APMC yard in Baikampady, in a move to stop spreading Covid-19. Citing that Central Market building has lacking space and congested, it was difficult to maintain social distancing also. Hence, MCC had arranged facilities for both wholesale dealers and retailers of fruits and vegetables at the APMC yard. Due to this, a total of 151 wholesale dealers and around 300 retailers were shifted there.
Though MCC has claimed that proper arrangements were made at the APMC yard to do their business activities, the members of the Central Market Committee have been telling the media that they are unable to do their business at the APMC yard owing to lack of facilities. They have been alleging that MCC had ignored their grievances and did not provide even basic facilities. Hence, members of the Central Market Committee had convened a press conference in the city on Monday and informed of shifting their business activities from APMC yard to old Central Market building from today.
