Mangaluru: The famous Mangaluru Dasara and Navarathri Utsav was inaugurated by Police commissioner Dr P S Harsha, at Kudroli Gokarnanatheshwara temple, on Sunday, September 29.
After inaugurating the celebrations, Dr P S Harsha informed that police department has already made elaborate arrangements to ensure smooth functioning of the Dasara celebrations.
Sharada idol was taken in a grand procession with bands and ‘Huli Vesha’ (tiger dance) leading the procession. After various religious rituals Sharada idol was installed along with the idols of Navadurgas- Chandraganta, Kooshmandini, Skandamatha, Kathyayini, Mahagowri Adhi Shakthi, Shaila Putri, Siddidhatri and Bhramacharini.
As part of Navarathri Utsava, various religious rituals and cultural programmes will be held in the temple.
Dasara procession will be carried out on October 8 by evening and the festival would conclude with the immersion of idols in the temple pond, Pushkarani, with break of dawn on October 9.
It is first time in the history of Mangaluru Dasara that Sharada idol will lead the procession, followed by the other tableus as against the usual practice of tableaus going ahead of the idols. This change has been made by the temple management committee, after taking the permission from former union minister and temple renovation committee chairman B Janardhana Poojary.
Large number of devotees and tourists throng the temple during the festivity.
