Moodbidri: “Today we are living in a society where money and power matter a lot and there is a mad race for acquiring these through selfish and greedy means”, said former Lokayukta Justice Santosh Hegde delivering the keynote  address at an event organized by the Rostrum Speakers Club of Alva’s Education Foundation, Mijar, Moodbidri.

Justice Hegde added, ‘fall in social values has led to fall in the administration of the country’. I had not seen the suffering of people until I came to the post of Karnataka Lokayukta. The sufferings of people changed my outlook towards life”.

He told the students, ‘Everyone will get a chance, but if you make use of the opportunity and do your duty honestly then another better favorable fortuity will come in your way. He called upon students to inculcate contentment and humanism, which can help us live like a true human being in society.

During the interaction session, answering a question on the restriction of media coverage inside assembly he said, it is unlawful and unconstitutional to restrict the media. It is the right of every tax-paying citizen to know what their representative is up to. On the abrogation of article 370, he asserted, “Come what may, our country stands above all. It’s our responsibility to do whatever it takes to keep it that way.” Answering a question on reservation, he said he was of the opinion that reservation must be given depending upon the economic status of a person, not on caste”.

Justice Hegde spoke on many issues including the Cryptocurrency menace, the adultery law in India and rape. During deliberations on issues related to rape, Justice Hegde said that the death sentence is the only punishment that must be made compulsory for the rape culprits. He opined that corruption cannot be eradicated completely. It is a contagious disease. No country is corruption-free. It can be reduced by implementing morality and contentment among people.
He advised the students to use water wisely and sparingly, leaving enough for the next generation.

Alva’s Education Foundation Trustee Vivek Alva and Rostrum Faculty Coordinator Deepak were present among others.
