Mangaluru: A complaint has been filed with the cybercrime police against the circulation of a fake message that claims that a positive coronavirus case has been detected among Sahyadri College students.

In a press release, Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management Principal R Srinivasa Rao clarified that the Whatsapp message is fake news and that the attached link redirected to a vulgar, pornographic image. In this regard, the administration has filed a complaint with the Cyber Crime, Economic Offences and Narcotics cell in Mangaluru.

A screenshot of the fake message reads, “A news channel (name withheld): Mangalore- Sahyadri College campus officials have confirmed a case of coronavirus within the student community.” This is followed by a URL link.

Sharing a screenshot of the viral message, Principal Rao said, “No coronavirus is reported in our campus and the link in the message opens a vulgar pornographic image.”
