Mangaluru: Close on the heels of the announcement of Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to the district on January 19, MLC Ivan D’Souza informed that the Congress will hold a massive protest against his visit with the slogan “Go Back Amit Shah”.

Addressing the reporters here on Monday, January 6, Ivan said that the situation in the district is still tense after the implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC) and that it is not fair for Amit Shah to visit. “As the district is still boiling under the heat of opposition against the CAA and NRC, Amit Shah should not visit the district. Both the Commissioner of Police and Deputy Commissioner of the district should not allow him to come to the city until the situation is calm,” he stressed.

Ivan also questioned the move of the BJP leaders who are now planning to visit the houses of each individual in order to create awareness about the CAA and NRC. “The BJP party is a drama troupe and the leaders are acting before the houses. If the CAA doesn’t harm the Muslim community, then why did the government exclude only them while providing citizenship for people from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan? Thousands of people are being harassed on the basis of religion in other countries such as Sri Lanka. Why is the government considering only three countries to provide citizenship for people running from religious persecution?” he questioned.

MLC and district Congress president Hareesh Kumar, who was also present, alleged that the BJP government is attempting to cover up its mistakes by raising sensitive issues. He also urged the BJP to suspend MLA Somashekar Reddy immediately for his controversial statement against the Muslim community when warning them not to participate in protests against the CAA.
