Coastal Karnataka experiences unscheduled power outages

Mangaluru: Coastal Karnataka faces unscheduled power outages hitting consumers after the 1200 MW coal-based Udupi Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) shuts down both of its units due to technical snags four days back. These load shedding is not area specific and is carried out during the peak hours between 6am to 9am and 6 pm and 8 pm.

Mescom decided to cut power after getting instructions from the LDC, in areas which draw maximum power. From the past three days, there have been load shedding lasting one to two hours, both in the mornings and evenings.

According to a report by the Times of India daily, there was boiler leakages in one of the units and with the other there was leakage in the air pre-heater system and it would take time to rectify the issue. “The plant would be operational by the middle of next week as the State Government is putting pressure on us to get the plant up and running as soon as possible,’’ noted the source.

The report stated that Mescom gets 13% of the power generated from UPCL. The Udupi Power Project supplies 90% of the power it generates to the State of Karnataka and 10% to the State of Punjab.

Mescom headquartered at Mangaluru is vested with the responsibility of distribution of power to the districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Shivamogga and Chikkamagaluru.
