Mangaluru: Coast Guard personnel conducted a massive campaign against single-use plastic in all Coast Guard areas and beautiful beaches along the coast and riverfronts of Mangaluru and Karwar on Saturday, December 17.
This massive campaign has motivated other network of NGOs, grassroots organisations, youth, primary/ secondary students and teachers. The motto of the drive is “Cleanliness is next to Godliness”
The event was conducted at Bengre, Panambur, Meenakaliya, Suratkal, Chitrapur, Gurupura River Front at New Mangaluru and at Ravindranath Tagore Beach, Karwar. The Coast Guard Headquarters, No. 3 Coast Guard District, Karnataka and units under command have enthusiastically participated in the event wherein they spread the awareness on Swachh Bharat, by displaying banners and placards with the tagline “Plastic se Raksha, Swacchata hi Suraksha”. The special drive against the single-use plastic was also conducted in and around the beaches of Mangaluru and Karwar.
The school children from various schools also participated in the special drive “Plastic Se Suraksha coastal cleanup” drive. They collected tons of plastic waste from different places.
During the event, Coast Guard DIG SS Dasila called upon local people to support the campaign and to join Coast Guard efforts to end plastic pollution. “By avoiding single-use plastic we can prevent poisoning and injuring marine life. The exponential use of plastics is now threatening the very survival of our beautiful planet,” he added.
