Mangaluru: Torrential rains lashing across Malnad have thrown life out of gear. With several trees being uprooted and with landslides reported at several places, Charmadi Ghats will be closed on Wednesday, June 13 and Thursday, June 14.
Though hillocks had caved in at various spot along the Charmadi Ghats late on Monday night and the loose mud blocking the roads were cleared around Tuesday afternoon, the Ghats will be closed for two days for safety purposes. With this vehicular flow from both sides- from Mudigere and Mangaluru have been prohibited, said Chikamagaluru Superintendent of Police K Annamalai.
Unfortunately, several commuters remained stuck in the Ghats without food and water for several hours after the landslides. SP Annamalai had rushed to the spot and had supervised the clearance works personally. He even rolled up his sleeves and worked with the locals where was required.
It was a positive scene when Mudigere MLA M P Kumaraswamy, Belthangady MLA Hrish Poonja, renowned social worker Charmady Hasanabba among others came to the spot and upheld humanity by serving people with food and water. Meanwhile, two ailing persons were also taken to Belthangady hospital.
