Century old MCC Bank to go to polls on Sept 7

Mangalore : With the elections to choose a new Board of Directors for the Mangalore Catholic Co-operative bank scheduled to be held on September 7, Saturday, there are a lot of speculations as to who would make it this time. A total of 36 candidates in general category and six in women’s category are in the fray. The elections will be held at Loyola Hall, St Aloysius College from 9 am to 4 pm.

The  century old bank was established way back in 1912. V Maheshwarappa, Returning officer said the elections will be held for the post of 15 directors. Of the total posts, two are reserved for women and one each for SC/ST and backward communities. He said elections will be held for 13 positions as no nominations have been received from SC/ST categories. There are a total number of 20,128 voters and counting will begin soon after the elections.

Presently there are three groups led by the sitting Chairman Melwyn D’Cunha, Francis Cutinho Fermai and Valentine D’Silva. All the three groups have exuded confidence of their candidates winning and promise to take the bank to new heights.

In the last five-year period, the total business of the bank has increased from Rs 125 crore to Rs 400 crore. The deposits have increased from Rs 92 crore to Rs 256 crore and advances from Rs 43 crore to Rs 156 crore.
