Mangaluru: The Car Street roads, which were closed for traffic for the past two months for the purpose laying of UGD pipelines and further development, have been opened effective today, December 1. However, movement on these roads are open only for two-wheelers, as per the decision of Mangaluru South MLA Vedavyas Kamath.
It can be recalled that the Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL) had closed the roads for development work between the Venkataramana Temple Square and Balaji Talkies Junction under the Smart City Mission. The cost of this work was estimated at Rs 17 crores.
The development work included the replacing of a 1.8 km-long old underground drainage (UGD) pipeline, white-topping of the roads, construction of stormwater drains, footpaths and provision for laying of utility lines and beautification work. The deadline to complete the project was set at November end and the work is almost completed.
Speaking to the media while inspecting the work, MLA Vedavyas Kamath expressed his happiness at seeing that the work is almost completed. “As of December 1, movement of two-wheelers will be allowed on this stretch of road, the concretisation of which is almost complete. Only works related to the underground drainage, storm-water drain, footpath, and Mescom utility works are pending and these will be completed soon,” he said.
He thanked the public and the store-owners of the area for their co-operation and said, “I have discussed the completion of the pending underground drainage and MESCOM works with the concerned officials. They should be completed as soon as possible and all kinds of vehicular movement will be allowed most likely by next week or so.”
Local ward corporator and president of health standing committee Poornima, General Manager (Technical) MSCL Er Arun Prabha, BJP leaders Muralidhar Nayak, Ramesh Hegde, Hari Prasad, Smart city officials, MESCOM officials, and others were present.
