Mangaluru: As the demand for jackfruit has been increasing recently, the Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Co-operative Limited (CAMPCO) is planning to introduce jackfruit chocolate to the market now.
Necessary arrangements have been made at the CAMPCO factory in Puttur in order to execute the plan. It has already produced a sample piece of jackfruit flavoured chocolate and it would soon enter into the market once the Management Board of CAMPCO gives approval for the same.
Speaking to the newskarnataka.com CAMPCO president S R Sathischandra informed that the CAMPCO has been attempting to produce value-added products from jackfruit. “We have already produced a sample piece of jackfruit chocolate. This bar chocolate made by us contains 15 per cent jackfruit. We are conducting further experiments to make it tastier before taking a decision on its commercial launch. Meanwhile, we are in touch with the Indian Institute of Horticulture Research (IIHR) in order to produce more such products from horticulture crops", he added.
Though there was utter negligence towards jackfruit in the past, awareness programmes on producing value-added products from jackfruit have enlightened the farmers now. Hence, they are now trying to produce traditional food items like 'mambala', 'pappad', 'mulka' 'gaarige', 'pickle' among others. District administration's jackfruit fest also helped people to know about different products of jackfruit.
How to produce jackfruit chocolate?
In order to produce jackfruit chocolate, measures will be taken to dry the jackfruit through 'vacuum fryer'. Later, fried jackfruit would be added into the chocolate mixture. The final product of the jackfruit chocolate would have the fragrance of jackfruit and it will also have a unique taste of jackfruit.
