Kasargod: Responding to the demands of the locals, a bridge was built across Madakkal river at Trikkaripura. However, the happiness of the locals was short lived, to be precise only for 58 days because on the 58th day of inauguration of the bridge, it collapsed reflecting the sorry state of affairs.

The 320mts long bridge was built at the cost of Rs 3.96cr and was inaugurated by the then revenue minister Adoor Prakash on April 28, 2013. Called the longest bridge of the region, the same collapsed on June 2013 and even after four years, the remains of the bridge continue to lurk from the flowing river like the skeleton of some water monster.

While none were pulled up for the sub standard works, the authorities also did not take interest in re-constructing the much needed bridge.

The result is that the locals continue to cross river using boats. Their situation turns very precarious during the monsoon when the river flows turbulently. But, who cares, says a local students who adds that there have been times when non availability of boats had put their lives on hold.

There are old and the ailing too living here, what do we do in case there is an emergency, he questions.
