Mangaluru: Former Mangaluru North MLA B A Mohiuddin Bava on Wednesday, September 16, accused the BJP of being involved in the rampant illegal sand mining in the district.

Speaking to the media at the Mangaluru Press Club, the former MLA said, “It looks like the BJP is hand-in-hand with the rampant illegal sand mining. That is why MLA Bharath Shetty is keeping quiet and is not taking any action against illegal sand mining which is going on in Adyar, Meenakaliya, Biakampady, Tannirbhavi, Nayarkudru, and many other locations.”

The Congress leader asserted that it is clear that BJP workers are involved in the illegal sand extraction both in the CRZ and non-CRZ areas. “The illegal activity has reached its peak even at a time when construction activities have almost come to a standstill over the past few months,” he said.

Stating that the price of sand has risen to Rs 18,000 per truckload, he informed that he has taken up this issue with district Deputy Commissioner Dr K V Rajendra, and urged him to take action immediately.

“If the administration fails to act against illegal sand mining, the Congress will stage a massive protest till the concerned authorities take action and stop the illegal trade of sand,” Bava warned, adding that a complaint will be lodged with the Lokayukta in this regard.
