Bantwal: “Sindhi, Nepali, Konkani, Manipuri and Sanskrit languages which have less population than that of Tuluvas have been included in the 8th schedule of Indian Constitution. It is unfortunate that despite 5 million Tulu speaking people, Tulu language has not yet received recognition as separate language, “ said Malar Jayarama Rai, president of Bantwal Tulu Sahitya Sammelana here on December 10.

Presiding over first-ever Tulu Sahitya Sammelana of Bantwal taluk organized by Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy and Bantwal Taluk Tulu Sahitya Sammelana committee at Sparsha Kalamandir, Rai said, “Tulu being deprived of getting recognition is indeed injustice towards Tuluvas. Language is a fundamental cultural right of citizens. UNESCO has recognized all the languages even those which do not have separate script.”

Renowned senior writer Yerya Laxminarayana Alva inaugurated an exhibition on the occasion. He expressed displeasure over English language dominating regional languages like Tulu.

District-in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai inaugurated the first ever Tulu Sammelana and called upon people to preserve Tulu language and culture.

Prior to the inauguration, Tulu Sahitya Academy president A C Bhandary kickstarted the programe by flag hoisting.

On the occasion monthly books ‘Madipu’ and B Tammayya’s 15th episode ‘Tuluve’ were released.

The guests were welcomed in a traditional by offering Bella-neer (water and jaggery).

Prior to the stage programme, grand procession was carried out from B C Road Brahmashree Narayana Guru circle to Kalamandir with tableaus displaying Tulu culture. President Jayarama Rai was taken in procession in an open jeep.
