Bantwal station turns gaushala, cops don avatar of ‘Gaurakshaks’

Bantwal: Cops are trained to be prepared for the worst of situations. However, this is one scenario that the police personnel at Bantwal town police were totally unprepared for. The cops had to don the avatar of ‘Gaurakshaks’ as the station became a temporary shelter for rescued bovines for more than a week.

Reportedly, the Bantwal police had rescued these cows during a raid at an illegal slaughterhouse near Loretto Padavu here. While the police had made arrangements to transport these cows to a gaushala in Pajir, it is gathered that the gaushala which is sheltering nearly 300 cows said that they will not be able to accommodate any more cows and thus the police had to abort this plan.

With no other gaushala too coming forth to offer shelter to these cows the police had no option but to accommodate them at the Bantwal Town police station and discharge the additional duty of feeding the cows. A policeman, on condition of anonymity, said that they found it difficult to sit in the station because of the stench emanating from the cow dung and urine. Moreover, the station became a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other insects, he added.

The cops heaved a sigh of relief on Wednesday when a gaushala located in Savanoor finally came forth to accommodate the cows.
