Banks must invest more on issues relating to cyber crime: Arundhathi Bhattacharya

Mangaluru: “As digital banking has been facing cyber threats in the recent years, banks are required to invest more on cybercrime issues,” said former chairman of the State Bank of India Arundhathi Bhattacharya on Tuesday, February 18.

She was delivering a founders’ day lecture organised as part of the Founders’ Day celebration at the auditorium of the Karnataka Bank Head Office, located near the Mahaveera Circle, Pumpwell. Arundhathi said, “Even though most of the banks have a digital banking facility, there is a need for innovate, in order to give more facilities. However, digital banking is not free from problems. As digital banking facing cyber threats, banks need to give more prominence and address this problem by investing more on advanced technologies.”

“Even if banks opt for the latest technologies to serve their customers, they will gain their trust only if its service is transparent and honest. Nowadays, customers need not go to other banks as all banks have similar facilities, with the latest technologies. However, technology alone cannot help keep the trust of the people. The role of the staff with their honest service also decides the success of the banks.”

During his introduction speech, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Karnataka Bank Mahabaleshwara M S said that the bank has been making optimum use of technology to roll out innovative products to cater to the changing needs and preferences of its customers. As part of its digital initiative, the bank has launched TAB Banking, a digitalised version for opening a savings bank account, he informed.

Presiding over the programme Chairman of the bank P Jayarama Bhat said that Karnataka Bank has already peeped into the future of the banking system and has also invested more on those technologies which will prevent cybercrimes. “We are assuring our customers that Karnataka Bank will continue its honest service using all the latest technologies,” he added.

Meanwhile, the bank’s CSR announcements were made and an offer letter of financial assistance was handed over to the concerned persons on the occasion.

Later, a musical concert of Padma Bhushan Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, Vidwan Dr Mysuru Manjunath, Padma Shri Pandit Vijay Ghate and Vidwan Patri Sathish Kumar mesmerised the audience.

Chief Business Officer Gokuldas Pai proposed the vote of thanks.
