Mangaluru: The coastal city is experiencing cold weather in the new year. A youth organisation ‘We are United’ has come forward to distribute blankets, sweaters and other such warm clothes to the needy to protect them from the cold winter air.

Ananth Prabhu G, Advisor, We are United, said the winter this year in Mangaluru was colder than ever. When the entire city is preferring wearing warm clothes and having hot coffee, the poor and underprivileged cannot afford even a blanket and die due to the cold, without a roof over their head or clothes on their bodies, he lamented. He added that the initiative was to come to the aid of such homeless people.

“The poor sleep in rags on footpaths and die of cold. The poor sleep close to each other but how can one sleep soundly without a blanket in such conditions? They shiver due to the cold winds which blow all-night-long and some aged people die due to this,” said Ananth Prabhu.

“To tackle this issue, We are United headed by Azfar Razaq, President and Nishan Bhandary, Secretary, has rolled out the initiative,” he said. “The blankets will be distributed at Kankanady Circle near Kunil complex from 9 PM onwards on Saturday,” he said, adding that the organisation actively organizes many programmes which benefit the people hailing from the weaker sections
