Mangaluru: The residents of Anna Vista apartment ended up in a rather ‘stinky situation’ after sewage water flooded the parking lot of the apartment in Kadri.
Sewage water clogged the parking lot in the basement by upto 2 to 3 feet height. The residents were unable to go about their routine lives due to the foul smell emanating from the water.
Speaking to NewsKarnataka, social activist Gerard Towers said that this incident was the result of the drainage connection being too old and narrow, and the failure of the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) to replace it with a new connection. People in the flat were unable to come out due to the water clogging and the foul smell in the basement, he added, accusing the MCC of negligence.
Speaking to Newskarnataka, Corporator Sabitha Misquith said, “The problem has come to my notice and I have visited the spot. This inconvenience has taken place as the manhole near Kadri Circle and the petrol pump has collapsed.”
She also said that the MCC commissioner had visited the spot along with other officials and asked them to resolve the issue.
“Tankers were brought to clear the sewage water, but the foul smell will remain for at least a month. It will be very difficult for the residents to live there. There are two aged women living in the building and it will be difficult for them to leave for a while,” said Mr Towers adding that he has advised the apartment association to file a complaint and claim compensation for the negligence of the MCC.
Of the two aged women, one is about the age of 80 and has to go for chemotherapy while the other has to visit the doctor on a regular basis. The people are very unhappy with the way the MCC has gone about laying the concrete roads.
